In short, Nick and I are back home from the hospital. He’s not 100%, but he seems like Nick again. Thanks so much for the get-well emails and comments–I know they helped speed his recovery!
Now that I have Nick settled and happy at home, I can focus a wee bit of attention on my (neglected) self. Following days of grazing and haphazard meals (at best), and even more random slepping, I need refreshment and revival, big time! So I am starting with this nutrient-packed green smoothie to get my engine back in gear.
This smoothie has no dairy or added sweeteners, as it is meant to be a “detox” drink. I added celery because research indicates that it may have a calming effect on the nervous system. Additionally, research suggests that improves liver health, too, so all in all, a great (and inexpensive) detox ingredient.
I always have spinach on hand, so in it went, too. Leafy greens of all kinds are excellent for detoxification, and spinach is especially high in iron. For sweetness, as well as texture, I used a combination of apple and banana. Freezing the latter gives the smoothie extra body, but it isn’t essential.
Lemon and ginger give this smoothie real zing. Ginger has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. In addition to the vibrant, peppery flavor it contributes, it is well regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers. Glow, glow, glow!
Hope you give this a try, it made me feel brand new!
