Book Giveaway! Power Hungry: The Ultimate Energy Bar Cookbook!

photo

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Although my new book, Power Hungry: The Ultimate Energy Bar Cookbook has been out on amazon for a few weeks, today is the OFFICIAL release date to all outlets!

A number of readers have asked questions about the recipes in the book, so I am answering some of the top ones here (feel free to email or post a comment if you have more questions!):

The recipes in the book:

*Are naturally gluten-free (except in a few cases where I give a variation to make it gluten-free)

*Are soy-free!

*Are endlessly adaptable if you are allergic to nuts. My sister has been severely allergic to peanuts and hazelnuts all her life, so this is a big one for me. I provide instructions for using your choice of nut or seed butter (umm, sunflower butter, hemp butter and tahini…) as well as your choice of nut or seed. If you are steering clear of nuts, you can always go with seeds!

*Are sweetened with natural sweeteners (e.g., dates, dried fruit, your choice of natural liquid sweetener such as honey, agave nectar or maple syrup, and (sparingly, in a few recipes) natural cane sugar or organic brown sugar). If you compare with store-bought bars, the sugar count in mine is almost always lower, plus, it’s always natural.

*I even have Paleo power bar options!

Before I get to the details of the giveaway, some gratitude is in order.

If you have already pre-ordered or ordered the book, a million thank yous! This is a book I’ve been longing to write for ages, so even though it was a lot of hard work conjuring and testing the recipes, but lucky for me (and everyone else within eating distance) the results of all of my testing fueled me along!

One of the major highlights of this book was getting to be a part of the photo shoot—a first for me! I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Tina Rupp, who is (1) a sensationally talented photographer; (2) one of the nicest people you could hope to meet (and/or work with); and (3) a super-mom and super-wife to boot.

The bars in the book photos were made by yours truly which was not so much a highlight as it was an exercise in hand-wringing and hair-pulling (all self-inflicted). When I say that these bars travel well, I mean it—they survived a Texas to NYC trip in my carry-on luggage, along with what seemed like hundreds of containers of various foodstuffs ranging from goji berries to vegan protein powders to spirulina. (I was certain I would be stopped at security, but I sailed right through; go figure). But I had nothing to worry about: Tina and her crew brought out the natural beauty of all of the bars.

If you like the styling of the book, you have my wonderful publishers at Lake Isle Press to thank (Hiroko Kiifner and Jennifer Sitt), along with the brilliant book designer, Ellen Swandiak (who also lent her gorgeous apartment for the photo shoot). What amazing women, all around! And while I am giving the Oscar speech, a million thanks to my fantastic agent, Clare Pelino.

I hope you enjoy the book! I’ve been fueling myself with homemade power bars since my graduate school days and they have (quite literally) powered me through thousands of workouts, runs, swims, bike rides, races, and fitness classes, not to mention many marathon mommy days (the ultimate endurance test!).  Enjoy!

Hello. I just bought your book and I am very excited about it. I was looking through the rescipes and ran across something that I would like to make sure I understand. For one of the recipes it says "1 cup of dried fruit, chopped (e.g., apricots, apples, cherries, raisins)." Does that mean that I use one cup of each dried fruit or that I divide the cup equally so that there is 1 cup of all the fruits combined? This may be silly but I just want to make sure I make it correctly! Thank you.

Hi Marco,

Good question! It is one cup total (you can use any fruit you like or a combination to make up the one cup). Thanks for getting the book! :)

My fav is a banana-it's filling, nutritious, and it brings up my blood sugar if it's low.

My favorite power ingredient is probably hemp seeds. They have a subtle flavor and can easily be added to everything. You can sprinkle them on salads, mix them into nut butters, use them as an egg replacer, put them in granola bars. They possibilities are endless!
